a sweet taste of bengali culture

Just before our work day got over, we stopped at a small stall to have brinjal pakoras and I happened to mention to Mr.Malay Mukherjee that we were lookinhg forward to seeing some bengaliculture while we were there. And he infact invited us to a rehearsal which was to happen in his house that day! Boy were we lucky!

Only Shruti was unwell so we had to see if she d be well enough to go. When we returned to dishari she had gone to the doctor but since she was quite drowsy and feverish we decided that she should go back home and rest. Mr.Mukherjee had called us at 6 and now it was almost 7.30 but we just left in the hope that we might just get to listen to some 2-3 odd songs. Shruti took the same train home whili Phani and I got off at Tollyganj. It was already 8.30. We called Mr.Mekherjee just praying we wernt too late and he invited us home. Now we were desperate to get there quickly. The rickshawala who took us drove like an absolute maniac and since there is no system of private customers, he picked up 3 more people on the way. So we got dropped off at a crossing and began running towards our destination. When we reached we were really surprised to see a bunch of people waving to us from the balcony and who seemed as eager for our arrival as we were for their song :)

I have no words to describe the music they played. One bangali song, two telegu, one hindi. We were psyched by the end. So much energy. So much passion. They are a group that have been singing since the 1970s for the common mans struggles.  It was mindblowing. We forgot we had to get back to Dishari by 9.30. Malay dada took us after this to a sweet shop and we tasted all different bengali sweets. Mishthi dahi was good. Anyhow by the time we left it was 10 and oh we were so late. We picked up perus and cucumber for dinner and thankfully got a train as soon as we reached the station.

When at the Baruipur station we asked a cyclerickshawala to take us to Dishari, he didnt understand our language and we didnt his. We asked a few people on the way and finally got there. The gate of the institute were closed. We tried waking up someone by banging them with our hands but didnt work. Finally Phani climbed over..blew some sort of horn..disturbed a father who was extremely angry but in the end accepted our apologies coz we said we had gotten late coz we went to drop Shruti home. And we crashed. I guuess alls well that ends well :)
